How to defeat your problem areas

Are you still dreaming that you can spot-reduce your way to a better physique? Crunching your way to flat abs daily?

I have a far more effective suggestion for you: Change your focus and go GAINS! Let me explain…

When my clients (usually women) say they want to “lose fat,” that all-around statement often doesn’t reflect how specific their goals are. When quizzed exactly where we find we’re carrying said “excess” fat, many of us go directly to – the hips, the abs, and those nagging chicken wings.

And of course the expectation that Spot Reduction (the idea that you can direct fat loss to a single area) is ONLY going to take place in those areas. Right?

Well, I have news for you – that’s pretty much a MYTH. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything to help your problem areas.

By strategically ADDING muscle, you can reshape your body and get closer to your ideal body composition.

In fact, I challenge you to think about how you might want to GAIN weight in order to achieve the physique you want.

Here’s why.

POUNDS OF MUSCLE VERSUS POUNDS OF FAT

The thought of gaining weight to look better might seem ridiculous.

But we’re talking about gaining muscle weight, NOT fat weight, and there’s a BIG difference.

Muscle is denser than body fat, so 5 kgs of muscle takes up a lot LESS space than 5 kgs of body fat. And that new muscle can make you look a lot better by changing how your body looks and how it fits into your clothing!

Most of my clients who gain muscle say their clothing fits better!

Their body weight may not have changed or even increased marginally in some instances, but they lose centimetres around their waist, hips and thighs and they fit more comfortably into SMALLER dress sizes.

INCREASE IN STRENGTH, POWER AND ENDURANCE

When you stop playing the “needing to lose weight” game and focus on strength training – you’ll not only get rid of these problem areas but you’ll also inevitably increase your strength, power and endurance.

It’s tempting to judge your progress by the scales, but believe me, they are going to lead you astray.

Instead…

Focus on whether you have more energy from day to day.

Focus on whether you’re able to get through the workout doing more reps than you did last week, or using heavier weights.

Focus on whether you’re feel stronger, more confident.

Is it lifting your posture and form throughout the day?

Is it reducing your stress levels?

There are so many other better ways to track your progress than how much weight you have lost.

There’s another all-important element of ‘spot reduction’ which is far more important than the type of workouts you’re doing.

And that’s your nutrition.

FOOD AS FUEL

Before you jump on the latest fad-diet wagon that promises an overnight flat belly or trim thighs…

…simply think about eating food to fuel your activities for the day.

Food, at its most fundamental, is to fuel your body and mind.

Think nutrient-dense whole foods.

There should be limited processed foods and an abundance of lean proteins, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables.

Your body simply performs better when it’s properly fuelled and you’ll need good nutrition that your body can readily access to support muscle growth.
